New poly-3,4-di:methylene-pyrrolidinium salts - useful as demulsifiers, flocculants, etc., prepd. from di:allyl-ammonium salt and bi:sulphate

Poly-3,4-dimethylene-pyrrolidinium salts of formula (I) are new. R1 and R2 = H, 1-18C alkyl or alkylcarbamoylmethyl; X = an anion; and n = the deg. of polymerisation. (I) are prepd. by reacting a diallylammonium salt of formula (II) with 1-50 mole.% of a metal bisulphite (esp. NaHSO3) in an aq. medium at pH 5-10 under oxidising conditions, pref. provided by aeration or by adding a peroxydisulphate and a sulphite. USE - (I) are useful as demulsifiers for breaking o/w emulsions and flocculants for water and waste water treatments (claimed), as well as conductive coating materials and biocides (esp. algicides).
