The double container system for storage and transportation of radioactive materials comprises a removable inner container and an external shielding container, which are both provided with individual lids. Loading and sealing operations comprise the following stages: (a) the introduction of empty double container system into shielded chamber, (b) loading of inner container with encased radioactive material, (c) sealing of inner container using inner lid, (d) removal of double container with charged inner container sealed with inner lid from shielded chamber (e) welding external lid to inner lid outside shielded chamber and (f) sealing outer container with shielding lid.
