For measuring and straightening a long shaft 10 which is supported by a number of bearings 14, use is made of a laser beam in line with the shaft 10 as a reference line R. Using a measuring instrument 20 provided with a digital, two-axis coordinate field 24, the reference line R can be calculated from two arbitrary points Pr0, Pr1 via a computer. Parallelism and transverse displacement in relation to the centre line C1 of the shaft are ensured in principle by intermediate pieces 26 on the devices 16, 20, which, with V-shaped cutouts, rest on generatrices on the surface 40 of the shaft. Measurements of other points P2, 3, ..n at bearing places on the shaft are carried out by registering the point P'2, 3, ..n where the reference line R meets the measurement field 24 in relation to the zero point of the coordinate system, which is equal to the calculated value of the point P'r2, r3, ..rn where the reference line meets the measurement field 24. From a set of measured data, deviations from the ideal straight line for the shaft can be corrected by moving one or more of the bearing places 1, 2, 3, ..n. <IMAGE>
