PURPOSE:To produce the title compound under a mild condition efficiently and in high yield by subjecting an alkanolamine as a reaction raw substance to a vapor-phase intramolecular dehydration reaction and then reacting the reaction product with a sulfite or a bisulfite. CONSTITUTION:An alkanolamine (e.g. monoethanolamine, isopropanolamine or 2-amino-1-propanolamine) shown by formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H, methyl or ethyl; R<3> is H, methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, t-butyl, n-butyl, aminoethyl, hydroxyethyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl) is dehydrated in the presence of a catalyst such as phosphorus-based catalyst and then reacted with sulfurous acid, an alkali metal or ammonium sulfite or an alkali metal bisulfite or ammonium bisulfite to give an aminoalkylsulfonate (e.g. taurine) shown by formula II (X is R<1> or R<2>; Y is R<2> when X is R<1> and Y is R<1> when X is R<2>; M is H, alkali metal or NH4). The method is a process of low cost. |
