On a flat knitting machine having two beds of needles in an inverted V formation, there is a cam carriage on each side. These have a traversing drive for each, and the carriages are not coupled at the bow. Additionally, a position regulator is fitted to one of the carriages. The knitting machine (1) has two beds (2, 3) and cam carriages (6, 9) traversing the needles, on the rails (4, 7). Driving the carriages are endless belts on wheels at the front and back of the machine. The drive is coupled back and front to a cross shaft (30) which has a coupling (50, 51) to engage or disengage, and brakes (52, 53). The transmission is then driven by an electric motor (36). By means of another smaller motor which is superimposed on the rear carriage (9), electronic controls are arranged to ensure that the cam is positioned with accuracy. This facilitates the transfer of stitches, as required.
