The communication network has terminals which are controllable by an information carrier, e.g. a smart card (20), having stored time data. One terminal (10) may control the functions of another terminal using additional information stored in the smart card such as the telephone number of the other terminals, desired time data and control functions. When the smart card is inserted in the terminal (10), the latter transmits data at a preset time and the called terminal (61) evaluates the data and initiates the control functions. The called terminal may control computers (23, 62) facsimile equipment (31, 63) or electronic controllers (72). USE -E.g. for control of facsimile etc. from car telephone for transmission at low-cost time, or controlling heating system on-off timing via radiotelephone.
