The heat exchanger (1) comprises several cooling tubes (2), water chambers (3a,3b), and is connected to a cooling water input (4) and an output (5). In the cooling water input, upstream from the cooling tubes (2) is a sieve device (7a) for mechanical cleaning of large pollutant matter from the cooling water. This device comprises a rotation-symmetrical sieve (8a) and a rotatable suction unit (9a) located in the sieve centre and in a discharge elbow bend (10a). To clean the sieve, a discharge fitting (13a) is opened. The suction unit is driven via an angle gear (11a) and a motor (12a), and the sieve (7a) is flanged into the cooling water input (4). By operation of the motor the suction device slides over the whole sieve, and cleans it. Cleaning occurs either at intervals or continuously. USE - To clean the cooling water fed to a heat exchanger.
