The present invention relates to a heat-generating element (1), particularly for heating the air in an additional electric heater in a motor vehicle, comprising at least one PTC heating element (5) and an insulating housing (2, 3) surrounding the PTC heating element (5). The invention further comprises electric conductor tracks (5; 6, 10), which are in contact with the PTC heating element (5) on opposing sides. In order to create a heat-producing element (1) of this type, which has good contact between the conductor track and the at least one PTC element and which is suitable for the highly insulating receiving of the PTC element, the present invention proposes to design the housing (2, 3) in two parts with a housing shell element (2) and a mating shell element (3), which rest against each other with a sealing strip (4, 21) interposed between them and enclose and seal the at least one PTC heating element (5). The present invention further relates to an additional electric heater for a motor vehicle with a layer structure held in a frame, comprising the at least one heat-generating element (1).
