In response to a disturbance, sensors 2 initiate an activating signal which may be interrupted and cancelled by appropriate means. Failure to cancel the signal causes, in addition to conventional audible and visible alarms, the transmission 10 of an encoded signal to a remote receiving and decoding apparatus 11-15. In an exemplary embodiment of the invention, information may be included in the signal corresponding to the registration number of the vehicle.
