PURPOSE:To obtain formed bodies having the desired shape, structure and porosity by forming a resin impregnated aggregate of vapor-grown carbon fibers, sintering the resulting formed bodies in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and subjecting the sintered bodies to activation treatment. CONSTITUTION:A thermoplastic resin (e.g. epoxy resin) 2 blended with a curing agent, a plasticizer, etc., is impregnated into an aggregate 1 of whisker-shaped vapor-grown carbon fibers and the resin impregnated aggregate 1 is formed to obtain molded bodies. These formed bodies are sintered at 1,000-1,500 deg.C for 10-30min in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and the sintered bodies 3 are subjected to activation treatment at 600-1,000 deg.C for 10-60min in an oxidizing atmosphere to obtain activated carbon-based formed bodies (beads) 6 each having a porous shell 4 made of activated carbon fibers as a surface layer and holding vapor-grown extra fine activated carbon fibers 5 in the interior. |
