The plant for use in a submarine, includes a bank of fuel cells requiring a supply of gaseous hydrogen and a supply of gaseous oxygen to produce an electrical output. First supply means (24) supplies to the plant a hydrogen-containing compound. preferably methanol, which is liquid at NTP and which can undergo an endothermic reaction to liberate gaseous hydrogen, and a second supply (10) supplies liquid hydrogen peroxide to the plant. A reformer (21) is connected to the first supply means, in which the hydrogen-containing compound undergoes an endothermic reaction to liberate gaseous hydrogen. A decomposer (12) is connected to the second supply means and decomposes the hydrogen peroxide so as to liberate gaseous oxygen. Means is provided, preferably from the decomposer (12), for supplying heat to the hydrogen. containing compound, prior to entry, or within the reformer (21), so as to maintain the endothermic reaction. The gaseous hydrogen and gaseous oxygen given-off in the reformer and the decomposer are then supplied to the fuel cell in order to generate an electrical output. <IMAGE> |
