PURPOSE: To prepare a nonionic surfactant by reacting a specific amount of polyvalent oxy-acid with a reaction product of a composition containing calcium with a surface active alcohol to form an alkoxylated derivative of the alcohol. CONSTITUTION: The alkoxylated derivative of an alcohol, which is useful as a nonionic surfactant, is obtained by first mixing ethylene glycol with calcium oxide, calcium hydroxide or a mixture thereof to form a composition containing calcium, then after stripping the composition to remove free ethylene glycol, reacting the composition containing calcium with a surface active alcohol to obtain an alcohol derivative, adding a sufficient amount of a polyvalent oxy-acid to the derivative to neutralize 20-75% of alkalinity and introducing an alkylene oxide group.
