Disclosed herein is an asbestos-free brake lining, which contains a base material, an auxiliary material and a filler, and is molded with a binder. The base material contains 2 to 30 volume percent of copper-containing fiber with respect to the brake lining. The auxiliary material contains 1 to 30 volume percent of talc with respect to the brake lining. The brake lining, which contains no asbestos, exerts no harmful influence on the human body and environment. In this brake lining, a static friction coefficient mu s as well as the ratio mu s/ mu d of the static friction coefficient ins to a dynamic friction coefficient mu d are reduced, whereby occurrence of a low-frequency brake noise is suppressed in a braking operation, to give no unpleasant feeling to the driver etc.
