<p>The conventionl telephone circuit (10) and dial (11) are connected to the exchange line (12), but are only operable when a switching mechanism (40) is operated by the insertion of a valid card (30), with unexpired units (31) on it. When the card is inserted (32) into the detector system (20, 21), the unexpired cash value is registered (22, 23). The number of units used by the telephone circuit is subtracted from the cash value and indicated on a totaliser (24, 25), which can also transmit the total use data to the exchange.
