A device to establish the contour of a workpiece (20), particularly a turned part, by means of a coherent beam of light (44) which produces a diffraction pattern on an arrangement of detectors when it falls on the contour of the workpiece, comprises a light source (40) which emits the coherent beam of light (44), an associated array of detectors (42) comprising a plurality of light-sensitive detectors and an analysis means to analyse the signals produced by the detectors. The detector array (42) and the light source (40) are mounted in the same support (38) which can be moved in a plane parallel to the contour to be measured with the aid of adjusting devices (28, 36). Means are provided to determine the position of the support (38) in the plane of movement. A regulator (58) controls the adjusting devices (36, 28) so that the beam of light (44) remains on the contour when the support (38) is moved along it.
