PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution of the polarizing element which performs conversion between concentric polarized light and linear polarized light and to facilitate the formation of the element by composing the polarizing element of a TN liquid crystal layer which is oriented in one linear direction on one liquid crystal orienting surface and in the tangent direction of a concentric circle on the other surface. CONSTITUTION:The polarizing element 110A consists of one TN liquid crystal layer which is oriented in one linear direction on the side of a semiconductor laser 8 and in the tangent direction of the concentric circle on the side of a waveguide layer 100. Consequently, linear polarized light emitted by the semiconductor laser 8 is converged by a condenser lens 9 into parallel light a20, which is transmitted through the polarizing element 110A to become concentric light a21, but this concentric polarized light a21 is concentric polarized light a21 which has the same direction of an electric field vector at diagonal positions of the concentric circle since linear polarized light a20 incident on the polarizing element 110A is completely in phase. Consequently, the element constitution is simplified and the liquid crystal is oriented in the concentric circle tangent direction (rotating direction) on one side, and in the linear direction on the other side, so the element is easily formed. |
