In a method of operating a condensing economiser for a combustion heating plant and having a sensible heat recovery section (12) and a latent heat recovery section (14), the flow rates and temperatures of the heat exchange fluid are controlled so that the minimum flue gas temperature in the sensible heat recovery section is above the acid dew point of the flue gas, and so that the flue gas is cooled to a temperature below the water dew point for that gas in the latent heat recovery section. Appropriate valves and pipework are provided to allow the establishment of co-current flow in the sensible heat recovery section when burning sulphur-bearing fuels, and counter-current flow when burning sweet fuels. A water spray may be used to cool the flue gas prior to its entry into the latent heat recovery section, to minimise the likelihood of acid condensation occurring. <IMAGE>
