CONSTITUTION:An automatic transmission in which the first, second, and the third planetary gear mechanisms 1-3 are arranged coaxially with an input shaft 4 and an output shaft 5 are provided with plural kinds of engagement.release patterns for clutches K1-K5 and brake devices B1-B4 for setting a prescribed speed change pattern, and the number of revolution of a rotary member in a gear train is different, even if the obtained speed change ratio is equal. In the speed change from the first speed to the second speed, B2 is once engaged from the K1, K4, K5, B1 engagement state, and then K5 and B2 are released, and then the transition to the second speed is performed by releasing K4 and engaging B3, and the variation of the revolution of the rotary member is suppressed. Accordingly, the speed change shock is improved, and the unnecessary revolution is suppressed, and durability can be improved.
