<p>The present invention relates to a refuse compactor comprising a chute with a slanted bottom which, via an orifice capable of being sealed off by a sliding door (19), gives access to a compacting unit in which is mounted a piston (8) which is cyclically displaceable between a high position and a low compacting position and which interacts with a mechanism slaving the movement of the sliding door to its own movement. According to the invention, this slaving mechanism comprises, on a wall (1a, 1b) of the compacting unit (1), at least one manoeuvring member (20) which is movable in both displacement directions of the piston, projecting in the path of its rear face at a short distance from the top dead centre of the latter and connected to the door (19) by a step-down coupling (25, 26) of its lifting stroke.
