The mechanical pencil has a two-piece chuck having a ball rotatably arranged on its head and has spring in between the stpped outer part of the chuck rear and the inner step part of the fastener to tighten the chuck such that the ball is placed in contact with the tapered face of the fastener to present little resistance for the forward movement for the lead but strong resistance against the rearward movement of the lead to firmly hold the lead. The front cap houses a free slider to provide a lead holder within it to hold the lead with a proper strength of support.
