The invention provides that a winching apparatus is in the form of a trailer vehicle which can be moved from side to side. A winch drum (34) is slidably carried on a mast frame (76) of the mobile trailer unit and can be lowered into the ground (16) so that it lies below ground level and can be used for pulling a new pipe (26) into an existing underground pipe (10). The winch unit (34) when it is below ground level is arranged to be jacked against the end of the existing pipe (10) so that there is minimal or no traction reaction tending to pull the vehicle into the excavation (16) in which the winch (34) is located. |
