A device for releasably clamping the end of a conductor comprises a body 301 having two intersecting bores 5, 7 at an acute angle to each other so that a conductor inserted in the bore 7 is clamped against the side of the bore by a clamping head 8 which is spring-loaded at 213 and located in the other bore 5. A facing piece 314 holds the clamping means in place in the body 301. A plurality of such clamping devices may be incorporated in a single body (Fig. 1, not shown) which may be made of insulating or conductive material or a composite of the two (Fig. 6, not shown). A clamping head 8 may be mounted at both ends of a helical spring thus enabling two clamping points to be obtained from a single spring (Fig. 5, not shown). The conductor may be removed from the device by the insertion of a pointed implement alongside the conductor in the bore 7. The top of the clamping head 8 may be serrated or roughened to prevent the implement from slipping off the head (Fig. 14, not shown). In a further embodiment, Fig. 8, comprising a plurality of double-ended springs, the middles of the springs are secured to a rigid rod 327 which may be moved laterally in either direction along the axis of the springs to release the locking action of the clamping heads 8. In other cases the rods may pass through the clamping heads themselves (e.g. Fig. 34, not shown). The shape of the head may be in the form of circular steps as shown in Fig. 4, or alternatively as simple steps along one flat face (Figs. 26, 27, 28, not shown), or a roller (Fig. 35, not shown) and the spring may be a leaf spring (Figs. 40, 41, not shown). In other embodiments the locking action is released pneumatically (Figs. 15 to 19, not shown) or hydraulically. A toggle switch incorporating the invention is described (Figs. 37 to 39, not shown). |
