1,202,485. Hydrocyanation of olefins. E.I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 6 Nov., 1968 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 52562/68. Heading C2C. Ethylenically unsaturated organic compounds containing 2-20 carbon atoms are hydrocyanated by reaction with hydrogen cyanide in the presence of a catalyst, of the formula wherein Z is OR or R, R is an alkyl or aryl radical having up to 18 carbon atoms, M is P, As or Sb, M<SP>11</SP> is Mo or W and n is an integer of 1-4. The reaction may be effected at a temperature of - 25‹ to + 200‹ C. in an inert solvent employing a molar ratio of starting material to catalyst of from 10: 1 to 2000: 1 and a catalyst promoter may also be present. Suitable starting materials include 4-pentene nitriles obtained by the isomerization of 3-pentene nitriles in the presence of catalysts of the above type wherein M<SP>11</SP> may also be Cr. Specified olefinically unsaturated compounds which may be hydro - cyanated are ethylene, propylene, butene-1, pentene-2 and hexene-2 and substituted compounds such as styrene,α-methylstyrene. 3- pentene nitrile, 4-pentene nitrile and 2-methyl- 3-butene nitrile. |
