A maintenance free bearing for automotive door hinges has a metal backing ring (3) ith an anti-corrosion protective coating (2) in which a hinge bolt slides with a clearance fit. On the inner face of the metal backing (3) is a porous layer (4) typically of bronze and outside that and forming a bearing surface for the hinge bolt is a further porous layer (5) consisting of bronze with a low friction filler of PTFE or lead. An improvement to the prodn. method and redn. of bearing play is achieved if the outer surface of the bearing material (5) facing the hinge pin is provided with a wave form profile of uniform height (7) and depth (8). ADVANTAGE - The bearing can be produced automatically in large numbers and the bearing surface is long lasting. A close tolerance fit is achieveable with little play between hinge bolt and the metal backing ring.
