A method is described for reducing the light-off time of a catalytic converter (10), which comprises exposing the matrix (18) of the converter (10) to an alternating magnetic field or to electromagnetic radiation having such a frequency that the wash coat on the matrix (18) and the particles of catalyst dispersed in the wash coat are heated to the light-off temperature without a corresponding increase in the temperature of the entire matrix. In the preferred embodiment, the matrix is constructed in two or more parts and only one part (18) is heated by microwave radiation from a source (26) connected to the converter (10). |
