PURPOSE:To obtain a high water absorption magnification to not only fresh water but sea water as well by impregnating a water absorptive agent into plural pieces of filaments, respectively, paralleling and twisting these filaments to form yarn and using this yarn as the water absorptive material. CONSTITUTION:Plural pieces of the filaments 20 formed with a water absorptive agent layer 21 on the outer periphery are paralleled and twisted to form the water absorptive yarn which constitutes the water absorptive material. The water absorptive material for water shielding in an optical fiber cable in this case is obtained by using filaments and the water absorptive agent to be impregnated therein, etc., and the filaments are exemplified by filaments of polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, polyester, etc., which are used alone or in combination. The water absorptive agent prepd. by compounding a binder, water absorptive resin, and aging preventing agent and dissolving the compd. in a solvent, such as toluene is exemplified as the water absorptive agent to be impregnated in filaments. The water absorptive swelling to the sea water is improved in this way. |
