Method for regenerating a particulate filter arranged in the exhaust of a diesel internal combustion engine

A description is given of a method for regenerating a particulate filter arranged in the exhaust of a diesel internal combustion engine by burning off the particulates with the aid of a burner. In order to minimise fuel consumption for the regeneration phase, the proposal is to allow a predetermined operating period to elapse and to initiate the burn-off process only when conditions for regeneration of the particulate filter are optimum. Moreover, the fuel supply is controlled in such a way during the burn-off process that the exhaust-gas temperature cannot exceed a predetermined limiting value, the duration of the burn-off process being determined as a function of the variables exhaust-gas temperature, residual oxygen content in the exhaust gas and filter burden.
