PURPOSE:To enhance not only sensitivity and S/N but also preservability by recording and reproducing data using an optical data recording medium having a membrane containing a specific cyanine dye. CONSTITUTION:A medium provided with a membrane having a thickness of below 1000Angstrom containing a cyanine dye represented by formula (I) but no binder is used on a transparent substrate and irradiated with laser beam from a position on the side of the substrate to record and reproduce data. In the formula, R1, R2 and R3 may be same or different and are respectively a 1-16C alkyl group, X is halogen, perhydrohalogenous acid, boron tetrafluoride, toluenesulfonic acid or alkyl sulfate, A is a benzene or naphthyl ring which may have alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, carboxyl, halogen, allyl or alkylcarboxyl and n is 0 or an integer of 1-3. |
