PURPOSE:To measure the intensity of the smell of a gas having an extremely high correlation with the functional evaluation adaptable to the human sensation by measuring the concn. of the hydrogen ions of an aq. soln. of specific components contributing to the smell in a gaseous sample in accordance with the predetermined correlation between the concn. of the hydrogen ions and the intensity of the smell of the gaseous sample. CONSTITUTION:Initial conditions, such as the volume of the exhaust gas to be fed into a reaction tube 2 and the volume of the pure water to be supplied, are set by an input device constituting an exhaust gas analysis apparatus 1. The exhaust gas of the specified flow rate is fed from an exhaust gas introducing section 4 into the reaction tube 2 upon ending of the setting and the reaction tube 2 is cooled by the refrigerant from a refrigerant container 3. Only the specific components contributing to the intensity of the smell are cooled and condensed in the reaction tube 2 in such a manner and are separated from the gaseous CO2 which does not condense. The pure water from a pure water supplying device 5 is thereafter rapidly poured into the reaction tube 2 to prepare the aq. soln. contg. the previously condensed components and the concn. of the specific components is uniformized by operating a stirring section 14; thereafter, the pH is measured by a pH value measuring instrument 6. The pH is stored in a ROM 8b and the intensity of the smell of the engine exhaust gas is thus known. |
