<p>This invention is directed to a method of transferring heat from a first fluid to a second, the temperature of the first being less than the boiling point of the second at ambient pressure, comprising the steps of: causing the fluids to come into heat flow communication; and reducing the pressure of the second fluid so that it boils at or below the temperature of the first. Further the invention is directed to a heat exchanger (1) for performing the method, comprising a pressure vessel (2), at least one tube (3) for conducting a fluid into, within, and out of the vessel (2) means for admitting a cooling medium to the vessel (2) and for directing it over the exterior surface of the tube (3) within the vessel (2), being inlet port (6) and nozzles (7) respectively; means for removing the cooling medium from the vessel (2) after contact with the tube (3) being pump 8; and means for reducing pressure in the vessel (2) also being pump (8) whereby to lower the temperature of evaporation of the cooling medium in the vessel (2). The invention also includes a desalination plant incorporating the heat exchange (1) which is adapted appropriately.</p> |
