A NMR apparatus comprising a sample cell within a rf coil in a magnetic field, the coil being connected to a rf generator and a rf receiver, characterised in that it comprises means to provide a variable DC electric field across a sample in the sample cell and means to provide timed reversal of that field determined by the operation of the apparatus is disclosed, as is a NMR sample cell comprising a closable container characterised in that it comprises means to provide a variable DC electric field across a contained sample. Such an apparatus or cell may be used in a method for determining electrophoretic mobility of one or more components of a sample characterised in that it comprises determining the phase shift and/or the distribution of phase shifts of an NMR signal with and without a DC electric field applied across the sample.
