In a vertical carousel having a loading and unloading opening (3) closable by means of a sliding door (5), there is provided, in the region of the lower return point of the movement path of the carriers of the vertical carousel, a flap (6) which serves for maintenance purposes and/or permits the removal of articles which have fallen from the carriers. In order to secure the flap against opening by unauthorised persons, it is assigned a blocking element (8) which can be transferred from the blocking position into its release position only by opening the sliding door (5). <IMAGE>
