In the transmission of facsimile pictures, it is known to transmit the black-and-white data represented by only one binary position per picture element by means of a run length coding process. For the transmission of pictures in which the individual picture elements are represented by binary words having several binary digits, the individual binary digits of all binary words of in each case one picture line are successively subjected to a run length coding and transmitted. When a hierarchical code is used for representing the samples, a compatibility to previous facsimile receivers is given at the same time which then only process the highest binary digit. In addition, measures for preprocessing the samples are specified in order to obtain a smoothed sequence which can be transmitted more effectively by means of run length coding. <IMAGE>
