The invention relates to a method for the measurement of the bath level of a metal bath - especially one under a layer of slag - in a container, especially in a converter, by means of a measuring probe consisting of an E.M.F. cell (solid electrolyte cell) for the measurement of the oxygen partial pressure and/or of a thermocouple element. The E.M.F. cell and/or the thermocouple element are in this case protected by a protective cap. The characterising feature of the invention is that the measuring probe is immersed relatively quickly in the metal bath to a depth predetermined as a fixed point with reference to a starting position situated outside the container. After the protective cap has melted, the oxygen partial pressure and/or the temperature are measured as a function of the distance covered by the measuring probe in the metal bath from the chosen fixed point during the upwards movement of the measuring probe, which takes place at a slower speed. The distance covered from the fixed point until the occurrence of a change in the measured oxygen partial pressure and/or the temperature is detected as a measure of the bath level. <IMAGE>
