A spindle of a metal which can be melted with difficulty is provided, and this tapers to a point at one end. It is heated to the melting point of the components of the glass. Nozzles are provided for depositing the components of the glass onto the spindle, and there are means of drawing the molten glass from the tapering end of the spindle, into a continuous optical fibre. Specifically the heating of the spindle is effected by exposing it to a radio frequency field. The nozzles for the pptn. of the components are plasma torches. Each torch feeds material with a diminishing degree of refraction, relatively to the spindle point. The material with the lowest index of refraction being deposited closest to the point of the spindle. The components of the glass material include Ge silicate and the nozzle closest to the tapering end of the spindle feeds the lowest concentration of germanium. Method increases the speed of precipitation of fibres on the spindle and of the drawing process considerably.
|
