The system particularly in motor vehicles, consists of a self locking belt reeling means and a clamping device having a fixed clamping jaw and a movable clamping jaw which grip the belt between them whilst in the locked position and are otherwise held in the resting position by spring force. The intention is to reduce the reaction time and also simplify the manufacture of the belt locking device. For this purpose the invention proposes that the belt reeling means (10) and movable clamping jaw (22) form a structural unit which is pivotable about a spindle (23) fixed to the housing, and the lever arm (a) between the rotation spindle (23) and the line of action of the spring (24) which biases the structural unit into its rest position is smaller than the lever arm (b) effective between the rotation spindle (23) and the point of exit (27) of the belt (12) from the belt reeling means (10). <IMAGE>
