Many applications of lasers have been made possible only through the use of optical waveguides for guiding the beam. It is problematic, in particular in the case of high-power lasers, to couple (inject) the radiation into the optical waveguide. Despite complex coupling optics, coupling losses occur which in the case of imprecise adjustment can lead to the destruction of the optical waveguide. These negative effects are avoided when the end face of the optical waveguide is used as beam-removing mirror (beam-sampling mirror). At the same time, high mode discrimination and thus a good beam quality is achieved due to the comparatively small surface of the beam-removing mirror.
