The principal subject of the invention is a compact nuclear magnetic resonance imaging apparatus. The invention principally relates to a medical nuclear magnetic resonance imaging apparatus comprising a superconducting coil 5 generating an intense continuous magnetic field. The coils generating the magnetic field gradient 4 are situated inside the cryogenic chamber 6 of the superconducting coil 7. Thus, it is possible, on the one hand, to reduce the electrical energy consumption of the coil 4, and, on the other hand, to reduce the diameter of the coil 5 generating an intense magnetic field Bo. This decrease in the diameter makes it possible, on the one hand, to use less superconducting material, and, on the other hand, to make the field created by the coil 5 more homogeneous. <IMAGE>
