A noise silencer 1 for reducing the transmission of noise from a highway is adapted to be fitted into a joint gap formed in the highway. It comprises a rectangular casing 3 and padding 2 enclosed in the casing. The casing is provided with vent holes 4 adapted to be closed by plugs 6. Before mounting the noise silencer, air is sucked from the silencer through the vent holes 4 to flatten the padding 2 and the vent holes are plugged. After the silencer has been fitted, the vent holes are opened to inflate the padding so that the silencer is pressed against opposite walls of the joint gap. <IMAGE>
