In an operating and maintenance device (BT), connected to a digital switching device, the operating and maintenance information (bwi) is formed by ASCII-coded, EBCDID-coded or CCITT-No. 2-coded characters and transmitted to the switching device by means of message-oriented transmission procedures. For the purpose of preserving the code transparency of the information to be transmitted, the protocol characters and additional characters not to be transmitted by means of the messages are converted in each case into a special transport character, which is not defined in the code respectively used, and in each case into a 1-byte-coded bit combination. <IMAGE>
