PURPOSE: To reduce the capacity of a program and to improve a processing speed by forming a font pattern external information area for storing font patterns and other information related to the fonts in a free area of KANJI (Chinese character) ROMs. CONSTITUTION: For the three-chip constitutional KANJI ROMs 1 to 3, the font pattern external information area 6 for storing information other than font patterns and allowed to be validated at the time of developing fonts is formed in a free area of chips storing 24×24 font patterns. The extending directiozas of ruled lines determined by JIS 6220 codes and the same font patterns as rotated (90 deg., 180 deg., 270 deg.) font patterns are stored in the area 6. Since information essential to the rotation or extension of ruled lines is stored in the area 6 formed in the free area of the chips of the same KANJI ROMs 1 to 3, programming is simplified and the development of fonts is accelerated.
