Muscle-development apparatus including a carriage 9 intended to be manoeuvred against the force developed by the stressing means. According to the invention, the manoeuvring carriage 9 is connected by means of a flexible link 5 to the stressing means which most often comprise weights 10, by means of a flexible link 5. This flexible link 5 passes around a pulley 1 with a spindle integral with the carriage 9 and is fastened to a bar 7. Depending on whether this bar 7 is blocked against the carriage 9 or is integral with the structure by virtue of a system of hooks 3, 4, 8, the effort to be applied in order to distance the carriage 9 is doubled or not doubled. <IMAGE>
