PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of literature comprehension by automatically searching and displaying in parallel corresponding sentences just by indicating elements shown in a chart. CONSTITUTION:Both chart code data 2 and sentence code data 3 of a literature read out of a literature data base 1 are sent to a plotting part 4 and written in a frame memory 5. Then both data 2 and 3 are displayed on a CRT 6. Then an operator touches a transparent tablet 7 set on the display screen of the CRT 6 to indicate a certain element of the chart. Thus the screen coordinates 81 of said element is obtained by a coordinate input circuit 8 and the touching action is reported to a control part 9. The part 9 produces a screen coordinate 41 via the part 4. An approximation searching part 10 detects that the coordinate 41 is set within a fixed distance from the coordinate 81. As a result, the indicated element is obtained as an element that is under plotting via the part 4.
