PURPOSE:To estimate a halftone picture in real time by writing picture data into remaining line memories while picture element data is read from a specified number of line memories. CONSTITUTION:A line memory part 22 receives binary data transmitted from a selection circuit 21, stores binary data in respective lines and the titled device consists of (M+1) pieces of line memories 22A-22I. A selection circuit 23 selects M-number of line memories required for current picture processing among (M+1) number of line memories. Respective binary data in M pieces of line memories are supplied to a halftone picture estimation part 30 and a single scanning aperture is selected among plural kinds of scanning apertures based on said data. Data showing the selected scanning aperture is supplied to a selection circuit 24, and the value of the halftone picture decided by a picture element level in the scanning aperture and gain is estimated. Thus, the halftone picture can be estimated in real time.
