PURPOSE:To obtain an anti-inflammatory agent controlling symptoms in such a degree as not to damage self-curing power and suppressing advance of condition of disease, containing a sugar lactam derivative. CONSTITUTION:An anti-inflammatory agent containing D-gluco-gamma-lactam (Y=CH2 OH), D-glucaro-delta-lactam (Y=COOH) or D-glucaro-delta-lactam (Y=COOR) shown by formula I [Y is CH2OH, COOH, salt thereof or COOR (R is 1-8C alkyl) as an active ingredient. The effective administration of the compound is oral administration, a dose is 100-150mg daily and administered once several times daily. The compound is obtained by chemical or enzymatic oxidation of antibiotic nojirimycin (5-amino-5-deoxy-D-glucopyranose) shown by formula II produced by a ray fungus.
