PURPOSE:To obtain the titled polyolefin by reaction between polyolefin and a mixture of specified ratio of sulfuryl chloride and chlorine to improve the chlorosulfonation efficiency and recover the by-product sulfur dioxide in high efficiency. CONSTITUTION:The objective polyolefin can be obtained by chlorination and chlorosulfonation, pref at 50-150 deg.C, between (A) e.g., high-density or low-density polyethylene with a melt flow ratio of 0.1-200 and (B) a mixture of sulfuryl chloride and chlorine in the weight ratio of 80/20-99/1. The sulfur dioxide formed as a by-product gas during said reaction is incorporated, if needed with further sulfur dioxide followed by adding an excess of chlorine gas and then passing through a column packed with activated carbon to carry out reaction at <=20 deg.C to produce a mixture of sulfuryl chloride and chlorine, which can be used again as the reactant for the aforementioned reaction.
