PURPOSE:To recover cumene, phenol and alpha-methylstyrene from a phenol distillation residue at high recovery, by forming a catalyst for cracking the phenol distillation residue from an oxygen-containing metal compound having a particle size of 0.02-100mum. CONSTITUTION:An alkyl metal compound, metal chloride or a metal is reacted with oxygen and water in the presence of steam at high temp. to obtain a catalyst for cracking a phenol distillation residue composed of an oxygen- containing metal compound having a particle size of 0.002-100mum being metal oxide. As the metal of the oxygen-containing metal compound catalyst, a metal of the Groups III, IV of the Periodic Table except an alkali metal is pref. When the thermal cracking of the phenol distillation residue is performed using this catalyst, cumene, alpha-methylstyrene and phenol can be recovered from said residue at high recovery. |
