PURPOSE:To enlarge a zoom magnification, and to miniaturize and lighten a device by making the magnification variable with the combination of a zoom lens and a scanning scope variable means to make the scanning scope variable. CONSTITUTION:When the telescopic side of a zoom switch 1 is turned on, a driving circuit 3 operates a zoom lens driving motor 41 and drives the zoom lens 4 to the telescopic side. When the position of the zoom lens 4 arrives at the telescopic edge, a scanning scope setting circuit 7 starts the action to reduce the scanning scope of an image pickup element 11. Thus, the zoom action to the telescopic side is continued electronically. When the wide angle side of the zoom switch 1 is turned on, a driving circuit 9 is controlled so as to expand the scanning scope of the image pickup element 11. When the scanning scope comes to be maximum, the zoom lens 4 is driven to the wide angle side.
