PURPOSE:To obtain high-quality tar of high aromaticity even in an oven of low operating rate, by incorporating charge coal whose water content has been reduced to a specified level by drying with the tar recovered from dry main and/or suction main followed by charge into a coke oven to control dusting during the charging. CONSTITUTION:Charge coal dried to such a degree as to be <=5wt.% for the water content is introduced, from a dried coal tank 1, into a kneader, whereas the tar recovered from dry main and/or suction main is fed to a kneader 2 using a feed pump 11, >=0.1wt.% of said tar being added to the above coal, and the resulting mixture is then charged into a coke oven 3 to carry out dry distillation, the crude coke oven gas, tar, water vapor and dust generated are treated with ammonia liquor being in circulation through a connecting pipe, the tar being flocculated. Thence, this tar is separated from the ammonia liquor through a decanter 10, being freed of sludge in a sedimentation tank 12, and the resulting tar is fed to a decanter 14, part of this tar being recycled to the kneader 2 using the pump 11.
