PURPOSE:To produce the polyhedron approximation data on an object in a short time by providing a contour polygon approximation part and plural polyhedron approximation parts. CONSTITUTION:An object is photographed by a video camera 1 and this picture of the object is temporarily stored in a picture memory 2. A contour polygon approximation part 3 traces successively the picture contour and sends the apex data on a polygon to the polyhedron approximation parts 4a-4c. The areas obtained by dividing equally a space where the object exists are allocated previously to the parts 4a-4c. Then the triangle data defining a side of a polygon as its bottom side and the photographing position as its apex are successively produced the polygon apex data received successively and the photographing position data set previously. The parts 4a-4c can decide at one time whether those triangles are included in said divided areas or not. If so, the triangle data are integrated within a polyhedron approximation part to which the relevant divided area is allocated. This cone data is defined as the first object approximation polyhedron data.
